Hailey ran down the street towards the surf shop where she worked. It wasn’t like the seventeen year old to be late for anything. She was usually very prompt and put together. Today not so much. She had lost track of time, gotten lost in a book and the next thing she knew she was glancing up at the clock and realizing she only had ten minutes to get dressed and to walk to work. That was not nearly enough time, and so she had sprang up immediately, threw on some clothes and taken off for the surf shop. She had worked on combing the tangles out of her hair as she ran and knew that she probably looked like hell. She was going to have to start setting an alarm on her phone, because she most certainly didn’t want this to happen again. Hailey soon gave up on trying to comb out her hair and instead just threw it into a messy bun on the top of her head and continued running. When she reached the surf shop she slid to a stop, almost having run past it. She pushed the door open and entered, out of breath and feeling a stitch in her side. It was a good thing she was a runner otherwise she might not have made it here. She leaned over, breathing hard and trying to catch her breath. It took her a minute, but she finally caught it. She snatched the stool that sat behind the counter where the cash register was and slid onto it. Actually, she more collapsed onto it. She sighed, glancing up to check the clock. Yes, she was late, but not by as much as she had thought she would be. Thankfully. She’d find some way to make up for it, and if not, well, she doubted anyone really cared. She couldn’t see anyone around the store at the moment, but considering the door had been unlocked when she had gotten there she figured someone was wandering around the place somewhere. It would all be good. Yep. At least, that’s what she kept telling herself.

ike never really fretted about getting to work. his parents owned the surf shop, and so they always called him to "make sure he was going to work on time" to "ensure his rent would be paid that month". ike lived in his parents' pool house and still didn't even have his own car, so it wasn't like he was mature enough to make sure he got to work on time every single day by himself. which made today weird, because he did. ike's parents were on vacation in mexico for the week and he'd pretty much ditched work the whole time they were gone. maybe he felt guilty about it, but at eleven thirty, he'd already opened up shop and was reclined behind the cash register, his nose in surfer magazine. "
it's weird how hailey isn't here yet." and just as that thought came to his mind, the brown haired girl basically ran into the door on her way in. ike cracked a smile and put down his magazine." you're late, hailey, " he said, like he was the boss, poking fun at her. "don't let it happen again, ms. walker. next time it may cost you your--" ike burst into laughter, unable to keep the gag going for more than a couple seconds. Hailey took several deep breaths, in need of as much air as possible considering her run. It was definitely a morning run she hadn’t expected, and one that she hoped not to repeat ever again. Hailey was used to being put together and looking her best. She wasn’t necessarily girly or anything, but she did like looking half way decent. Especially when she was going to be around a bunch of people. Oh well, that wasn’t going to happen today. "You're late, Hailey. Don't let it happen again, Ms. Walker. Next time it may cost you your--" He burst into laughter. "Hi Hailey." The young girl glared at him, but it didn’t last long. A smile spread onto her face as she took a seat down next to him and sighed. “And you’re on time. What kind of crazy, backwards world is this?” She laughed. Ike being on time and Hailey being late was definitely a change of pace. Heck, him showing up was something new and exciting. She could feel her pulse slowing somewhat, her breathing becoming a little steadier. “Seriously, though, I’m surprised to see you, let alone early. You thinking of trying something new and actually doing what you’re supposed to?” She was teasing, of course. But then, that was just Hailey. She had known this guy for a very long time and being with him was as easy as breathing most days. She loved days at work when he happened to be hanging around. The day just seemed to go faster that way. So she was very pleased to find that he had decided to show up. Nothing too horrible could come from that.

her face red and blotchy and slightly coated with sweat, hailey kind of looked a hot mess. it looked like she just ran the furthest she had ever run in her entire life. she smiled at him after he said hello to her and he smiled back, picking his magazine back up and fiddling with the pages to see if he could remember which one he was on. "and you're on time. what kind of crazy, backwards world is this?" she half laughed. ike looked up from his magazine and gave her this i-don't-even-know kind of look. "seriously, though, i’m surprised to see you, let alone early. you thinking of trying something new and actually doing what you’re supposed to?" hailey was all sarcastic-like. she sat down next to him and ike shrugged. "
last night, i had a dream that if i didn't show up today, some crazy sea monster guy was going to come into the shop and eat you. and since that'd be an undesirable event, i decided to show up and defend you from cannibalistic crazy dude from the ocean." that had all been a lie, of course. ike couldn't even remember what he had for breakfast that morning, let alone the dream he had the night before. he gave hailey a sincere look and nodded. " true stories, kid. true stories. " ike looked out at the ocean through the glass doors at the front of the store. he'd gone surfing earlier in the morning and the water was actually really cold. he figured it'd be nicer around this time and would do about anything to be in it, but there were probably too many people out for him to actually enjoy the experience. "you're all sweaty, " he said, reaching over to tuck a few strands of hair that hailey'd probably forgotten to pull back into her bun behind her ear.

Hailey glanced over at him in time to see him shrug at her question. She had a feeling even he didn’t know why he was here. His supposed reason was pretty funny though. "Last night, I had a dream that if I didn't show up today, some crazy sea monster guy was going to come into the shop and eat you. And since that'd be an undesirable event, I decided to show up and defend you from cannibalistic crazy dude from the ocean." She gave him her “you’re an idiot look”, but she couldn’t hold it long. She laughed, shaking her head at him. “My hero,” she said with a small roll of her eyes. "True stories, kid. True stories." She glared at him. “I’m not a kid.” If she had a dime for every time she was called that, though, she wouldn’t have to be working here. It irritated her, though he probably knew that. It wasn’t like she kept it a secret or anything. And she was far from a kid. She was seventeen, only months away from being a legal adult. There were kids her age that were already married with kids of their own. She was far from a kid. "You're all sweaty." Before she could even say anything he reached over and tucked some of the loose strands of her hair behind her ear. She felt her heart beat sped up, and it had nothing to do from the run she had made to get here this morning. It wasn’t an unfamiliar feeling for her. Whenever his hand brushed hers or he got just a little too close. But he seemed just about completely oblivious to her and any feelings she might have. She cleared her throat, trying to shake it off. “Yeah, well if you had run from my house to here you would be sweaty too.” Her voice shook a little when she said it. Great. To try and cover that up, Hailey reached over and stole his magazine from him. She leaned back in her chair as she started flipping through it, forcing herself to look at the pages of the magazine and not at him.

"i am not a kid," hailey replied sharply, glaring at him. ike let out a small laugh, he liked teasing her about her age because she always got so frustrated about it. she'd always be two years younger than him and as of right now she was a minor, so ike would always bring it up and watch her get fed up with him. her little glare face always made him laugh because of how serious she looked, and hailey was quite far from being serious. she cleared her throat after he tucked her hair behind her ear. "yeah well, if you had to run from my house to here, you'd be sweaty too." she had actually ran to work? ike laughed again. "
i could have given you a ride, you know. " actually, he probably couldn't have given her a ride. ike's phone was always on silent and he hardly ever checked his messages or anything. one time, he checked his missed calls from about a week and there were over a hundred from his parents and terri put together. which was weird, because they both knew that ike only really checks his phone right when he first wakes up in the morning. hailey reached over and snatched the magazine from him, flipping through the pages huffily and not looking anywhere else. " hey, that's mine," he half whined, slightly tugging at the corner of the magazine. " there's more by the boards. " actually, there weren't any more magazines and he'd only told her so that she'd get up and look for him. a devilish grin spread across his face and he giggled a bit. ike was a terrible liar.

Hailey didn’t find it funny that she had run to work that morning. In fact, it was the farthest thing from funny. Apparently Ike didn’t think so, though. "I could have given you a ride, you know." Hailey glanced up at him for a moment. “I was late. I wasn’t going to wait for you to possibly show up for me. Besides, you never answer your phone.” In all the years that she had known him she didn’t think she’d ever successfully gotten a call through to him. The thought of calling him for a ride was damn near laughable and he surely knew that. She flipped through the pages of the magazine, not really looking at it but it kept her eyes from wandering elsewhere. She felt him tug on the corner of the magazine. "Hey, that's mine." His whining brought a smile to her face. And he called her the child. "There's more by the boards." She glanced up to see the grin spreading across his face. “Liar.” She smiled, but tightened her grip on magazine in case he decided to snatch it from her hands. “And this may have been yours, but its mine now.” She shot him a grin and flipped another page. “What exactly am I reading anyway?” It was probably some crummy surfing magazine or something of the sort. That was what she would expect anyway. She closed the magazine to look at the front cover.

"liar", hailey smiled. ike hated how she knew him so well, even if the entire laguna beach area knew he lied like a child. and so he smiled back, trying to make it seem as if he wasn't about to snatch the book right out of her hands, but she must have noticed, because her grip tightened. "and this may have been yours, but it's mine now." he knew he was never going to be able to call that magazine his own again. he laughed a bit and wiped his hand over his face and going back to his normal sitting position, his feet on the counter and his chair tilted back. "what exactly am i reading anyway?" hailey looked disinterested in the magazine now and maybe there was a chance ike could get it back. "
surfer," she should have figured, she knew ike was into surfing. he directed his attention to some girls in crop tops and shorts coming into the shop, acknowledging them with a wave. "good morning, ladies. anything a could assist you with?" he said all proper-like, almost sarcastic. but he smiled at them and they smiled back, shaking their heads and giggling. he turned to hailey and whispered, "can i have the magazine back now? " he was getting kind of bored. ike put his feet back on the ground and stretched his arms out on the table, using them as a pillow, almost. "pleaaase? " he begged, not even looking at hailey. one of the girls was looking at these swimsuits they had and the other one was trying on necklaces. he watched them for a minute, anxiously tapping his foot. hailey was never going to let him have his magazine back.
