Noelle was finally off work for the night. She had spent the last several hours on her feet and the only thing she wanted to do right now was to go back to her crappy apartment and get off of them. She had a good walk from the restaurant where she worked to there, though, and so she swung her bag across her shoulder and set off in that direction. She had only called this town home for two months, but the place was already growing on her, feeling more like home than anywhere else she had ever been before. And Noelle had been in a lot of places. In the year since she had been kicked out of the system and had decided to leave Los Angeles, Noelle had been many places, not all of them in the state of California. At one time she had planned to go all the way to the East coast, but that hadn’t worked out and she had found herself drawn to this place. It wasn’t such a bad place to be, but Noelle knew herself. Eventually she would get tired of this place. Eventually she would get antsy and want to move on, and then she would leave and that would be the end of it. Because that was how she was. She had been this way all her life, even when she had been living in Los Angeles, bouncing from foster home to foster home. None of them had ever been home for her. None of them had ever been where she wanted to be. And she doubted that this place would be any different. Noelle was walking, just enjoying the night. The walk was one she had taken many times, so she knew it well. It was easy to let her mind wander, but she tried not to do that. There was something new that night, though, something she hadn’t seen before tonight. There was a crowd of people on the street in front of her, blocking her path, and she could hear music. It intrigued her, so she stopped to listen. Something about that voice was familiar to her. She slowly pushed her way through the people, and stopped dead in her tracks when she saw him. Sage Malone. His was a face she hadn’t seen in a long time, and one she had never expected to see again. She hadn’t really wanted to either. She froze, unable to move as she stared at him, not quite sure what to think.
