joanna had slowly been trying to work her way back into her parents good graces - although it was kind of hard to do when she was miles and miles away from them. the reality of things were that she hadn't seen or heard much from her parents since she was sixteen. when she first left her home it was a sigh of relief not having to deal with their nagging but at the same time it was hard being without them. of course things got better and soon enough her, cole and their daughter, stevie, created a new life together in laguna beach. but now, four years since jo had any real relationship with her parents, things were slowly starting to get hard again. cole's career wasn't working out as well has it had been and it bothered joanna that stevie was growing up without knowing her grandparents - unless you count the yearly card on birthdays and holidays. things just didn't seem to be holding up here and she had been contemplating if maybe it was time to go back to san fran. with a soft goodbye, joanna hung up the phone and left the kitchen to join cole in the livingroom. "that was my mom." she said with a lift of her eyebrows as she sat down on the couch. in the reclining chair across from her sat cole, looking more interested in the kiddy show that was on than stevie did, whom was on the floor in front of the television with a couple barbie dolls. "she said she'd like to see stevie and stuff." she mentioned casually, knowing this was just starting her round of nonchalant hints and gestures.

the day had been seemingly uneventful. cole did his usual drug deals in the afternoon while joanna kept their four year old daughter, stevie, occupied. one client was even more sketchier than cole's regulars, which once again left the twenty-one year old with an eerie feeling. he had been having feeling nearly every time he dealt, but he always played it off as his nerves about bringing home money to his family. deep down, though, he was worried that he was being watched. after he went home for the day, he shrugged it all off and was content to being with his family. after dinner, cole and stevie watched the usual kids shows while joanna talked on the phone with whoever. he was starting to get into the show when he heard joanna enter the room and sit across from him on the couch. at her mentioning her parents, cole darted a quick look at the blonde's face to see what emotion she was showing. he could tell she was trying to be nonchalant about bringing them up, but cole could tell there was an underlying tone to it all. he was trying to act as if he didn't care when joanna said that her mom wanted to see stevie and "stuff." he finally tore his eyes away from the television completely as he looked at her. "SEND HER A PICTURE." he looked at the blonde girl sitting in front of the television, playing with her barbies, before he spoke again. "WE DON'T NEED THEM, AND STEVIE DOESN'T EITHER." he was trying to keep his voice low enough that stevie couldn't hear the conversation, but loud enough to make his point clear to joanna. her parents had never been welcoming to him from the moment they heard about him, so why should he - and joanna, for that matter - let them into their family now?

her blue eyes stayed fixed on cole as he finally tore his attention away from the tv screen and spoke. her brow furrowed with a slight smirk. whether she'd agree or not, jo knew that cole had a point. her parents didn't want anything to do with stevie or cole when joanna was pregnant - did they really deserve a chance to get to know their granddaughter? maybe they did, maybe they didn't...she didn't know. but if joanna was ever going to get back on their good side, she needed to start somewhere. "a picture isn't the same as the real thing! doesn't do my baby girl justice!" she explained with a playful undertone - she wasn't trying to turn this isn't a serious discussion. "i know they haven't been the most welcoming....but that was four years ago and i was like..what, sixteen? maybe they see that they were wrong." she quietly explained as she tucked her legs underneath her. "it could be nice having them on our good side for once..." she suggested. "i mean, we don't know what's going to happen with us or your job or...what if we have another baby or something unexpected like that happens again?" she pointed out some realistic possibilities. "having someone else around to help out couldn't be a bad thing. specially with the ways things are going." she gestured to his current career choice, thinking that it was pretty obvious they both saw the flaws in cole's 'job'.

cole couldn't help, but smile at joanna's words about how a picture wouldn't do stevie justice. it was true that any photo didn't show off the light that seemed to brighten up any person's mood when stevie smiled. she was truly a special girl and clearly the joy of cole and joanna's lives. but was cole ready to let two people in that didn't want to be before? was he ready to have them criticizing him and his decisions again? most of all, was he ready to leave laguna beach? he knew that would be the inevitable choice once things were patched up. cole had made a life here - even if it was exactly the best one sometimes! he had friends. he had his family. that was all he needed. he was looking at joanna with a blank expression as she listed all of the things that could happen to them and how it would be easier to have her parents around to help, but at the mention of his "job," he felt his blank expression fade into one of defense. he knew dealing drugs was risky and in no way the ideal job, but it had supplied them with a place to live and given them everything they needed. he set his jaw for a second before he sat forward in his chair. "FOR ALL YOU KNOW, THEY'RE PLAYING NICE, SO THAT THEY CAN GET YOU AND STEVIE AWAY FROM ME." he ran a hand over his hair. "AS FOR MY JOB, IT'S HELPED US THIS FAR WITHOUT CAUSING ANY TROUBLE." at this, the memory of the sketchy guy he had dealt to today and the feeling he got from him popped into his head, but he pushed it away, playing it off as stress over the talk over her parents and his dealing.

the blonde quickly took notice of the blank stare that played on cole's face and she wondered if anything she had said was processing. would it really be such a bad thing to start patching things up with her parents? sure, they didn't show any interest in cole at first, but maybe now they saw that he was there to stay - forever and always, whether they liked it or not. after all, he was the father of stevie - no matter what, he was always going to be apart of her life and there was no changing that fact now. her brow lifted at cole's words and she couldn't help but smile. "babe, what are they going to do?" she stared at him with a playful smile. "put me and her on a boat like cargo and ship us off to france, some place far far away?" she took a second to pause. "come on, by now they should see that you're here to stay, like it or not. besdies, i think you earned some points for hanging around for four years now." it was pretty obvious that her and cole were good together ; they just worked. and the four years of raising a child on their own should prove anyone who says otherwise wrong. "and that's my point! this far it's helped but things don't last. i just think having them around could play out in our favor.." her expression grew less playful as her eyes glanced towards stevie. "what are you gonna say when she asks what her daddy does for work?" she questioned as her eyes settled back on him, knowing stevie wasn't even paying attention to their 'grown up' talk.
